Reviews the treatment literature discussing trauma-focused interventions for Vietnam veterans and rape and incest survivors. Some assumptions about the coping process that the authors believe underlie the diverse approaches that currently exist are examined. Specifically, the treatment approaches that are reviewed are considered in reference to 2 basic coping modes: approach and avoidance. The importance of understanding the process of coping with trauma is discussed to better understand treatment effectiveness.
