Strategic Utilization of Incest Offender Cognitions
Résumé :This article addresses the issue of therapeutic engagement of incest offenders by utilizing their belief systems. The argument is made that conventional methods of confronting offenders’ beliefs augment rather than diminish defensive strategies that are already regularly employed by these individuals. Strategic utilization of the offenders’ beliefs on the other hand takes what is offered by the client and uses it to forward therapy. The therapist attempts to fully understand and accept the belief as it is offered. Once this occurs the belief system can be critically examined by both therapist and offender, which often leads to a re-evaluation of thinking and a self confrontation of the initial belief by the client. Four common incest offender cognitions are presented and examples are used to describe this therapeutic approach.
